Louisiana Vehicle Title Bond: Not Available

Louisiana does not issue bonded titles. There is no provision in La. R.S. 32:707 for a surety bond in place of proof of ownership, and Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) has no bond form to accept. This page explains what Louisiana does instead, and when a title bond in another state may still get you a clean Louisiana title.

Why there is no Louisiana title bond

Thirty-five states have adopted some form of the Uniform Motor Vehicle Certificate of Title and Anti-Theft Act's bond provision, which lets an applicant who cannot prove ownership post a surety bond and receive a branded title. Louisiana has not. Its vehicle code requires the titling agency to be satisfied as to ownership before a title issues, and gives the applicant an administrative or judicial route when the paper trail is broken. A surety bond that the agency has no authority to accept does not help, and we will not sell you one for a Louisiana-titled vehicle.

What Louisiana does instead

  1. No statutory or OMV-policy bonded title program.
  2. The routes are (1) a Justice of the Peace court order (OMV Policy 3.00) for lien-free vehicles with a J.D.
  3. Power retail value under $5,000, with a physical inspection by a P.O.S.T.-certified officer and an adversarial proceeding against the owner of record;
  4. (2) a district or parish court judgment of ownership for higher-value vehicles;
  5. (3) the R.S. 32:707(M) good-faith possession route for vehicles 25 or more years old whose registration has lapsed for 3 years, with a one-year wait; and (4) the R.S. 32:707(L) antique, classic or vintage route where no ownership record exists.
  6. Duplicate titles issue only to the owner of record.

When a title bond may still apply

If the vehicle was last titled in a state that does bond titles, the fastest path is often to obtain a bonded title there and surrender it to Louisiana. Oregon's DMV manual, for example, expressly accepts other states' bonded titles and issues a clean Oregon title against them, and most non-bond states take the same view because the surrendered bonded title is a valid certificate of title from the issuing state. The catch is that the bonding state will usually require you to be its resident or to have the vehicle physically inside its borders. Our underwriters can read the prior-state record and tell you whether that route is open.

If the vehicle has never been titled anywhere, or Louisiana is the only state in its record, the Louisiana route above is the only one.

Underwriter's note. Several sureties advertise a Louisiana lost title bond, but R.S. 32:707 contains no bond provision and OMV policy does not reference one.

Louisiana FAQ

Can I get a bonded title in Louisiana?
No. Louisiana has no statute or rule allowing a surety bond in place of proof of ownership. No statutory or OMV-policy bonded title program.
What does Louisiana do instead of a title bond?
No statutory or OMV-policy bonded title program. The routes are (1) a Justice of the Peace court order (OMV Policy 3.00) for lien-free vehicles with a J.D. Power retail value under $5,000, with a physical inspection by a P.O.S.T.-certified officer and an adversarial proceeding against the owner of record;
Why do some websites sell a Louisiana lost title bond?
Because the product is sold nationally and the sellers do not check each state's law. A bond that Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) has no authority to accept will not get you a title, and the premium is non-refundable. We will not write a Louisiana title bond for a Louisiana-titled vehicle.
When might a title bond still help a Louisiana resident?
When the vehicle was last titled in a state that does bond titles. A bonded title issued by that state can usually be surrendered to Louisiana for a clean Louisiana title. Our underwriters can tell you whether the prior titling state qualifies.
